Everyone is chasing something.
In a world that is so daunting and tasking, that is the only thing that can keep us waking up in the morning, pushing through activities we may not want to do in order to reach that final goal. At one point, I thought the idea during this metaphorical chase was to run as fast as you can to the finish line. This caused me to burn out often, question my passions, and set unrealistic expectations.
During these trips and falls, I learned the importance of finding your pace. Being focused on the end goal can distract you from the beauty of the journey. Sometimes when you see other people on the same path, you believe you have to conform to their cadence without realizing their journey does not have the same end destination. While running my own race, I found so many other amazing people taking strides towards their own dreams and passions.
There are so many people in our communities redefining traditional ideas of success and pathways to financial freedom through arts, creativity, music, media, and creating businesses that pour back into building rapport within our cities. I believe that this “chase” is important and wanted to make sure to highlight that through some friends and creatives that exemplify this.
I hope the dialogue helps you on your own chase and the merch serves as a reminder to staying true to your own speed.
That feeling that goes back to being a child riding in the backseat of the car, peering out the window… staring at the sky. Watching the sun believing that as you’re rolling to your destination, you’re somehow getting closer to the sun; when in reality your distance to it is not altering at the speed that you think.
Similarly, life can mimic the same reality when you’re chasing your dreams. Chasing The Sun marks a shift in adolescence to early adulthood with pivotal moments finishing college, getting my first car (shout out the 05 Honda Accord), and exploring the dating scene while experiencing unbelievable moments like Barack Obama’s Top Songs of the Year, co-signs from notable celebrities/athletes, G-League sync licensing, contract discussions, to NPR Live Sessions, Selling out concerts and hosting/opening at festivals working exclusively with the homies without management or a label. Crazy to imagine songs that I made in my room by the window are now some of the favorite records of artists I looked up to. These highs and lows as an artist taught me so many lessons which are sprinkled throughout this concise 21 minute runtime. Throughout the journey of chasing artistry and following my dreams, I found out what is most important: my community, the people around me, and expressing our creative ideas to the fullest capability. Everything else is just extra.
This page is part of me fully expressing this idea through literature, music, media and now clothing. As Owie says, you have to express the art through all mediums as we all speak different languages. I hope it fits you well and also that you find your pace on your own personal chase.
